Hitchcock's Vision
Hitchcock explained two simple situations to describe the character of a person.
Situation-1:
Let us think that an old man is standing in front of a garden.
(Close-up to his face)
The old man looks in to the garden.
CUT:
A woman is playing with a child on her lap.
CUT:
The old man smiles.
This portrays that the old man is a soft-heart, kind and warm.
Situation-2:
Consider the other case, where in the same old man is standing in front of the same garden.
(Close-up to his face)
The same old man looks in to the garden.
CUT:
(But here i would like to cut to a different shot than the one we used earlier.)
Here the same woman is on her BIKINI lying on the garden.
CUT:
The old man smiles.
How dirty is the old man here? He is laughing at a woman who is on her bikini. Where in the world does a nice old man laughs at a girl wearing a bikini?
The only shot we have changed in both the situations is the 2nd one which just changed the character of a old man from a soft-heart to a pervert.
So, to conclude what Hitchcock says is, it is important to present your shots in an order so that it will make the audience understand your scene better.
